76 Trombones for Strathfield

76 Trombones for Strathfield

Strathfield Musical Society presents classic Broadway musical The Music Man at the Latvian Theatre in Parnell Street, Strathfield, from October 18 – 26, 2013.

The Music Man, with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey, was a hit on Broadway in 1957, winning five Tony Awards and running for 1,375 performances.

The musical tells the story of the arrival of a conman in a placid Iowa town on July 4th, 1912. Harold Hill (played by Tim Martin - pictured left) offers the unsuspecting Iowans the opportunity to solve all their town’s problems by starting up a boys’ band.

Most of the townspeople are excited by this prospect and happily hand over their deposits for instruments and uniforms. Only the Mayor (played by Brian Sadler) and the town librarian Marian (played by Natalie Elliott) are suspicious of the man and his motives.

The summer progresses in whirl of musical activities and excitement never seen before in River City. However, just as everything seems to point towards another successful con operation by Harold Hill, another travelling salesman comes to town and tells the Mayor all about Harold’s activities in other gullible towns. Harold is dragged before a town meeting and…

Tim Martin is thrilled to be creating the iconic role of Harold Hill in The Music Man.

“This is a movie musical I grew up with so the opportunity was too good to miss. The challenging songs with pages of lyrics to learn has kept me busy over the past few weeks. I'm sure many of my friends and students are tired of me bursting into ‘Well ya got trouble my friend...’ at every break in conversation!”

Tim works as a Performing Arts Teacher at St Joseph's Primary School Kingswood and other schools in the Parramatta Diocese.
Earlier this year Tim choreographed Waverley Lugar Brae's Guys and DollsThe Music Man sees Tim working again with Cathy Boyle, Natalya & Cameron - who were all involved with Holroyd's Cats in which Tim was The Rum Tum Tugger - A favourite role. Other roles include Curly in Oklahoma!, Jerry in The Full Monty and Lt Cable in South Pacific.
