Adelaide Students in Away

Adelaide Students in Away

University of Adelaide Theatre Guild presents Michael Gow’s contemporary Australian classic Away from May 4 – 18.

Three families head off away in the summer of 1967 to re-enact their Christmas holiday rituals.  Immigrants Harry and Vic are making the most of their time with their terminally ill son, Tom.  Roy and Coral continue to grieve the loss of their only son in Vietnam. Jim and Gwen try desperately to cling to their daughter Meg who is beginning to embrace her own independence and womanhood.

But when a troupe of Shakespearean fairies conjure up a magical storm, the families are drawn together to confront their darkest fears and tragic realities.  Only then can they begin to heal.

Michael Gow’s much loved Australian play, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, is a nostalgic look at Australia and Australians separated by diversity and drawn together by conflict.

Brimming with colourful Australian stereotypes and the universal themes of man versus nature, man versus man, and man’s internal struggle, Away is a funny, painful, yet truthful play about the journeys that bring us home to ourselves.

The young cast of students and educators from across Adelaide’s universities, colleges and schools comprises Robert Bell, Maxim Bevan, Karen Burns, Joshua Coldwell, Alex Daly, Sophie Dooley, Fiona Fraser, Kirsty Haigh, Imogen Hawkes, Danielle Macolino, Kelly Mildenhall, Tessa Price-Brooks, James Sherwin, Ben Todd and Kate van der Horst.

Directed by Aldo Longobardi, lighting design by Richard Parkhill and Multimedia by Ryan Merrett.
