Bankstown Theatre Company Caught in the Web of the Spider Woman

Bankstown Theatre Company reports that their latest production Kander and Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, opening on March 15,is creating enormous excitement according to director/choreographer, Edward Rooke.

‘There is so much energy in this production you can see the sparks flying,’ Rooke told Stage Whispers. ‘Rozlyne Howell as the Spider Woman is amazing. The part of Aurora calls for a triple threat and Roz delivers the goods with panache.  She sings and dances with style and is a fine actress. We are lucky to have found someone with so much talent and experience. Roz has worked internationally and made an enormous impression when she performed in Paris. She had 7 top ten hits, became a TV star and developed a huge fan base of smiling Frenchmen. – Let’s face it, if the French thought she was sexy, wait until you see her in ‘Spiderwoman’’.

Gavin Leahy is giving a finely tuned and emotionally charged performance as Molina, a window dresser incarcerated in a South American gaol . ‘Gavin has a voice to die for’, said Edward, ‘a beautiful sound that soars and rips your heart out. When we first thought of doing Spider Woman, I thought of Gavin as the ideal Molina. What a thrill when he agreed to do the show!

'With Nelson Padilla playing the stong-willed but vunerable, Valentin, the political activist,  Diane Wilson as Molina’s mother and Katie Young as Valentin’s girlfriend, Marta  the show is packed with talent and experience. I feel so lucky to be directing this show.’

Based on the  1976 Manuel Puig novel and the 1985 movie it inspired, the stage musical Kiss of the Spider Woman won the 1993 Tony Award for Best Musical and played  904 performances on Broadway.

Kiss of the Spider Woman opens at the Bankstown Art Centre, Olympic Parade Bankstown on  15th March, 2013, running for 8 performances – 15th, 16th17th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th March. Tickets can be obtained by ringing Stephen on 9676 1191.
