Bridesmaids Shine in Five Women Wearing the Same Dress

Javeenbah Theatre on the Gold Coast is set to close its 2014 playbill with irreverent comedy Five Women Wearing the Same Dress written by the creator of television’s ‘Six Feet Under’ and ‘True Blood’.

The play by Alan Ball is set during an ostentatious reception at an old-money estate where five reluctant bridesmaids hide out in the upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below.

The show runs from November 21stto December 6thand is directed by Dawn China.

Dawn says the comedy offers a touching look at the intricacies of friendship and love.

“The result of having five women, all bridesmaids, in the one room results in much squabbling, swapping of intimacies, kicking off of satin pumps, and flouncing of seven-yard skirts while the reception proceeds on the lawn below,” she said.

“The characters are all so different so the interplay between them makes for a hilarious story.

“We have the cynical ex-nympho, the straitlaced fundamentalist, the romantic, the lesbian, and the rebellious sibling whose anger runs deeper than simple sisterly envy.

“Audiences will be able to relate to many parts of the wedding ‘experience’ – especially if they’ve had the luck – or misfortune – of being in a bridal party,” she said.
