Death of a Salesman at Cronulla

Death of a Salesman at Cronulla

The final production for 2019 at Arts Theatre Cronulla is Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller’s well-known tragedy about the troubled life of Willy Loman. Set in the 1940s, the story and setting of the play were inspired by events from Miller’s own life, in particular, the life of his salesman uncle and the Brooklyn house where Miller grew up

The play focuses on the Loman family's tragic story of inflated dreams and thwarted desires. Willy imagines himself as successful and indispensable, when in fact he is a failure. A dramatic character driven to distraction by his desire to be well liked, Willy wants the fabled American dream. He covets the wealth of his dead brother Ben, and strives for a perfect life of achievement and happiness, but repeatedly fails to achieve anything he seeks. We witness him striving to come to terms with the actuality of his situation and his inability to accept change within himself and society, leading to intense internal conflict as well as struggles with his loyal wife Linda, and horrendous battles with his sons, Biff and Happy.

Miller structured the play as a montage of memories, dreams, confrontations, and arguments, all of which make up the last 24 hours of Willy's life.

The ATC production plays from Friday 25 October until Saturday 30 November. Performances are on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with three Sunday afternoon matinees. Tickets are $28/$25 and can be booked online www.artstheatrecronulla.com.au
