The Drowsy Chaperone for Shire

The Drowsy Chaperone for Shire

Following their successful season of The Addams Family late last in 2015, Shire Music Theatre (NSW) is presenting The Drowsy Chaperone: A Musical Comedy from April 17 – 26.

The completely original musical comedy with music and lyrics by Tony Award winners Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and book by Tony Award winners Bob Martin and Don McKellar, takes audiences on a wonderful journey back to the golden era of musical theatre... all without leaving one man’s New York apartment.

The Drowsy Chaperone tells the story of a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as "Man in Chair". To chase his blues away he drops the needle on his favourite LP – the 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically bursts to life on-stage telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs. Man in Chair's love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has ever been transported by the theatre. You may also split your sides laughing along the way!

Graham Egan will take the stage as the Man in Chair, joined by a cast featuring Ed Mafi (Feldzieg), Nicole Butler (Janet Van De Graaff), Scott Petryczkowycz (Underling), Kathryn Wenborn (Trix), Tim Wotherspoon (Robert Martin), Madeleine Carr (Kitty), Brad Clarke (Aldolpho), Jennifer Barker (The Drowsy Chaperone), Philby Mack (Gangster #1), James Musumeci (Gangster #2), Sue Green (Ms Tottendale) and Josh Mulheron (George). Rounding out the cast are Tracy Reid and Erin Sampson as the Maids.

Regular theatre patrons of musicals in the Shire will be familiar with the “lover’s duo” Nicole Butler and Tim Wotherspoon, playing many on stage couples, most recently the roles of Rooster and Lily St Regis in Miranda Musical Society’s production of Annie. Once again they find themselves playing lovers in a musical. “It is starting to become a comforting habit!” says Butler.

The recipient of thirteen major awards, The Drowsy Chaperone received more Tony Awards® than any other musical of the 2006 Broadway season, including Best Book (Bob Martin and Don McKellar); Original Score (Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison), Costume Design (Gregg Barnes) and Scenic Design (David Gallo).

The Drowsy Chaperone opens April 17th and runs for a strictly limited season until April 26th.
