Hunters Hill Theatre Looking New Home

Hunters Hill Theatre Looking New Home

Current venue put up for sale.

Hunters Hill Theatre, despite support from the local community in online and paper petitions, and numerous letters and emails to the Anglican diocese, will need to find a new home for its 2017 season.

Hunters Hill Theatre (HHT) entered into lengthy and extensive negotiations with All Saints Anglican Parish Council of Hunters Hill (owners of the current site of HHT) to secure further tenure but without success. Their licence agreement with All Saints Parish will therefore terminate at the end of this year (after 21 years), following a recommendation from the parish council to put their current venue, (the deconsecrated) St John’s Church in Woolwich, up for sale.

This is a shameful waste when you consider the voluntary time and funds the company and its members have invested in the venue to adapt it into a delightful little theatre and popular community resource, finding a new way to ensure it continued as a local hub in an age when church attendances in the area have declined.

The petition comments from over 1,000 people have shown that the sale will mean an enormous loss in the lives of the community of Hunters Hill, impacting large numbers of local seniors, the training of young artists, ties with local businesses, the fostering of the performing arts, and social cohesion in general.

HHT already have a great new season of plays lined up for 2017 and are busy searching for a new venue to bring this season alive on stage!

The theatre has been in its current beautiful heritage building since 1995 and is determined to continue well into the future, with the ongoing support of its members and of its hundreds of patrons and subscribers.

HHT thanks the public for all the overwhelming support and asks everyone to please keep it coming when it’s needed most. All offers of practical help, donations and suggestions for a new venue etc., can be made to the HHT President, Maggie Scott, on president@huntershilltheatre.com.au

Ideally of course the company would love to purchase a permanent home for HHT and are appealing to philanthropists and the wider community to see if there is anyone who might purchase the current building or another suitable property for us.

News of the theatre’s season launch in October and how to purchase 2017 subscriptions will be advertised in due course. Or please go to the theatre’s website www.huntershilltheatre.com.au

or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/huntershilltheatre/

HHT’s next production is “Gaslight” open August 5th. Written in 1938 and billed as a ‘Victorian thriller’ author Patrick Hamilton plunges us into fogbound London 1880 and a world of psychological torment, as the devastatingly appealing but appalling Jack Manningham slowly attempts to drive his gentle, devoted wife Bella, to the brink of insanity.
