It Shoulda Been You - Australian Premiere

Chatswood Musical Society (NSW) is to present the Australian premiere of the Broadway musical IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU, a musical farce with blushing brides, nervous grooms, overbearing mums, unexpected guests, and plenty of crazy twists and turns … at the Independent Theatre, North Sydney from 31 March, 2017.

The bride is Jewish. The groom is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature, his mother is a tempest in a cocktail shaker - WHAT could possibly go wrong?  And, when the bride's ex-boyfriend crashes the party, it's up to the sister of the bride to turn a tangled mess into happily-ever-after in this musical comedy for anyone who has ever had parents! It Shoulda Been You invites you to a roller-coaster of a wedding day, with a twist or three!

According to director James Worner there are all the relatable, familiar fears, tensions and joys of a family celebration… and then some.

“Family expectations, self-doubt, fear of disappointing loved ones, maternal love and approval, conflict and acceptance… it’s all there! And throw in some more star-crossed lovers, well… there really is something for everyone!”

Worner explains why he was so keen to direct the show – and thrilled when Chatswood won the rights to its Australian premiere: “On a recent trip to New York, I saw a dozen Broadway shows and this was the best of them, hands down! We all see elements of ourselves in the characters if not the situations themselves. It’s also laugh-out loud funny! I also love that our heroine is unconventional, defying the usual clichés. Plump, no-nonsense but ultimately seeking affirmation from her mother.”

It Shoulda Been You is a wedding musical that you'll never forget, where anything that can go wrong does, and love pops up in mysterious places. As Worner says “Who doesn’t love – and deserve - a fabulous wedding… if they want one?”

Chatswood’s Australian premiere of this It Shoulda Been You is directed by James Worner with musical director Natalya Aynsley, It Shoulda Been You, and stars Chloe Angel as Jenny Steinberg, Michaela Leisk as Rebecca Steinberg, Jon Emmett as Marty Kaufmann, Dave Berry as Brian Howard, Kate Mannix as Judy Steinberg, Chapin Ayres as Georgette Howard, Dylan Hayley Rosenthal as Annie Shepard, Greg Thornton as Greg Madison, Ken Goth as Murray Steinberg, Michael Saddington as George Howard, Atha Kastanias as Albert, Julia Brovedani as Aunt Sheila and Graeme Halliday as Uncle Morty.
