Castle Hill Players present The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett at the Pavilion Theatre, Castle Hill from 20 September to 12 October, 2019.

John & Jen in Perth

LOVE, loyalty and family are key themes in Stirling Theatre’s September 2019 production of John & Jen – a musical featuring only two actors.

Written by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald and directed by Tyler Eldridge, the show is set in the ever-changing United States between 1950 and 1990 and focuses on Jen and her relationships with the two Johns in her life.

One is her younger brother, who was killed in Vietnam, and the other is her son trying to find his way in life.

Kinky Boots Struts Into Rockdale

Rockdale Musical Society’s production of Kinky Boots, thehuge-hearted, high-heeled musical will be playing at Rockdale Town Hall from 6 September 2019 for 8 performances only, rounding out their 80th year celebrations.

With a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein and songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.

Stargazers Premieres at Brighton

The Australian premiere of Stargazers is being presented from August 16 - 31 by Brighton Theatre Company in Melbourne. A romantic, comedic script mixed with a touch of sci fi, it’s a look at how universal loneliness can be, and how sometimes what we most seek keeps us apart from what we most want.

Stargazers follows the story of Rupert Knox who just wants two things in life: to make the astronomical discovery of the new millennium and to find a date to his sister’s wedding. 

Celebration at Stirling Players

To a wedding, followed by a funeral. 

Sounds like a tragedy. 

But no. 

Celebration, the September 2019 production by the Stirling Players (SA), is definitely a comedy.   

"It will be a heap of fun," according to the director, Patsy Thomas.

"More serious plays tend to have heavy dialogue and long quiet patches, but this will be quite pacey."

The Drowsy Chaperone at Chatswood

North Shore Theatre Company (NSTC) is returning home to the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood after a three year hiatus for the musical farce The Drowsy Chaperone from 6 to 15 September 2019.

A loving send-up of American musical comedy from the 1920s, The Drowsy Chaperone charts the dream-come-true moment when a die-hard theatre fan plays his favourite cast album and the characters come to life in his living room.

Strong women tackle masculine bravado as SA Light Opera presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s topsy turvy operetta Princess Ida during August and September 2019. 

Female of the Species at Cronulla

Arts Theatre Cronulla's third production for 2019 is The Female of the Species, a wicked adult comedy that walks the tightrope between satire and farce while exploring how the ideology of writers of the 1970’s Women’s Liberation Movement era may have affected some readers. The inspiration for the play was a true-life incident involving Germaine Greer being held at gunpoint by a young student in 2000.

Farce About Houseguest Pest for Perth

HOW far would you go to get rid of an unwelcome houseguest?

It’s a question explored in The Nerd, a produced by Serial Productions at the Old Mill Theatre (WA) during July 2019, written by US playwright Larry Shue and directed by Joe Isaia and Rob Warner.

The story focuses on young architect Willum, visited by ex-GI Rick Steadman – a man he has never met but saved Willum’s life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam.

Die Fledermaus Returns to Melbourne

The internationally awarded Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria (GSOV) presents a popular light opera gem, Die Fledermaus (The Bat), in only four performances, 26-28 July, 2019, at Darebin Arts Centre, Preston.

Absent from Melbourne’s music scene for ten years, this production features GSOV’s principal singers, full chorus and orchestra, glamourous period costume, dancers whirling to Johann Strauss’ charming waltzes and director Robert Ray’s witty English adaptation of the libretto.
