Minefields & Miniskirts Brings Vietnam to Nerang

Minefields & Miniskirts Brings Vietnam to Nerang

In April 2016, Javeenbah Theatre presents Minefields and Miniskirts, a play that is both an engaging and frank recollection of how five Australian women experienced the Vietnam War. The play touches on issues of women’s rights, the realities of warfare, Australian reaction to the war and the legacy of our country’s involvement.

Director Gaye Gay said, “I am a born romantic, so when I attend a live performance, it doesn’t matter if I laugh or cry, so long as I leave having experienced the MAGIC created on stage.  The talented cast and crew of Minefields and Miniskirts have worked long and hard to weave a special kind of magic for its upcoming season and want to share this with our audiences”.

“The power of Minefields & Miniskirts comes mostly from the truth of its dialogue.  Each of the characters is retelling stories from real people who were part of the Vietnam War. Nothing is ‘made up’.  Everything is as remembered from that time in a country so far away and different from our own.”

It is rare that a piece of theatre is created from and solely informed by a primary source. The play’s basis is a thorough collection of oral histories transposed into Siobhan McHugh’s successful 1993 publication. There are no embellishments or poetic licence taken. The stories are often verbatim for what the women described and are so compelling that they don’t need alteration.
