New Musical Promises Behind The Scenes Drama

New Musical Promises Behind The Scenes Drama

CURTAIN call is drawing near for all-new musical When The Lights Go Down, the latest home-grown production at Phoenix Theatre (WA)  from Dark Psychic Productions, opening on October 26, 2013

Written and directed by resident Kathleen Uhlmann (from East Fremantle), When The Lights Go Down explores what happens behind-the-scenes with humour and bedazzled drama.

The show will feature a cast of more than 25 performers from across Perth and a live band, with an intimate cabaret setting delivering a Las Vegas Supper Club atmosphere.

Company owner and creative designer Ryan McNally says the show is a lot of fun.

“Sometimes there is more drama behind the scenes than on the stage,” he said. “What happens on opening night without your leading lady? You have everything on the line and there is no turning back. Will her understudy step up, or is it more a question of ‘how did she get there’?”

“When the lights go down, the cast will play!”

McNally says the company wants to change the way people see community theatre by offering an “experience” as opposed to a performance.

“We have something to prove with this show. We have been told that originality cannot be successful and we are out to prove them wrong,” he said.

“The production mixes a few things up – strong emotions like love and betrayal bring a bit of darkness, but it’s tempered by the glitz and musical numbers.

“With underlying humour, a unique and funky sound, and waitresses dressed in bustles, it really is an entertainment feast for the senses.

“Also, within the show, the audience is attending the opening of a show called ‘Lights’ – it’s a virtual show within a show.”

Cabaret seating in tables of four and a limit of 100 tickets per show promises a cosy theatrical experience, and audience members are encouraged to “put on the glitz” and dress up.

Musical direction is by Blake Howieson, 18, and choreography by Renae Jones.

Shows will be held on October 25, 26, 31 and November 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on November 3 and 9.

A bar is available during the show but patrons are advised to BYO food. Tables will be assigned upon arrival.

Phoenix Theatre is at 435 Carrington Street, Hamilton Hill.
