RENT for Chatswood
Chatswood Musical Society (NSW) presents RENT from September 23 to October 1 at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood.
With every generation, comes a musical that talks to its audience.
RENT is one of those musicals.
Jonathan Larson’s iconic musical for our times is a joyous and turbulent journey celebrating life, love and beauty amidst the tough realities of modern living.
With its over-riding theme to live life to the fullest and to embrace life as if there is “No Day But Today”, RENT tells many different stories that will resonate with people from all walks of life. Its hit songs include: “Seasons Of Love”, “La Vie Boheme” and “I’ll Cover You”, this production is not to be missed.
RENT is based on Puccini's much loved opera La Bohème. In the updated story, it tells of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
On Broadway, RENT gained critical acclaim and won many awards include the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after a 12-year run and 5124 performances - making it Broadway’s ninth longest running show at that time.
Trsgically, Jonathan Larson died of an aortic dissection the day before the show’s Off-Broadway opening.
Directed by Matt Cater with musical direction from Steven Kreamer and choreography by Mel Warwick, this productions stars Levi Gardner as Mark, Lily Robertson as Mimi, Liam Whan as Roger, Josif Jovanovski as Collins, Hayden Barltrop as the flamboyant Angel, Fiona Hamilton as Joanne, Amy Toledano as Maureen and Isaac Reefman as Benny.
The ensemble features Breina Abo, Sophie Carrington, Matt Cavanagh, Jemma Douglas-Eggins, Edwin Estanislao, Jac Fontana, Justin Gan, Georgia Gregory, Sam Lee, Victoria Mahy, Chidi Mbakwe, Laura Melrose, Gemma Pilley, Edward Reeve, Hannah Reid, Dylan Rosenthal, Aarin Starkey, Liz Testa and Jon Wiggins.
Performances are Friday 23, Sat 24, Tues 27, Thurs 29, Fri 30 Sept and Sat 1 Oct at 8pm
Plus matinees Sat 24 Sept and Sat 1 Oct at 2pm and Sun 25 Sept at 5pm
