Run For Your Wife in Mackay

Run For Your Wife in Mackay

One of Ray Cooney’s best-loved comedies, Run For Your Wife, a favourite piece with both professional and amateur theatre companies all over the world ever since its London première in 1983, is Kucom Theatre’s July 2014 production in the Lynette Denny Space, MECC in Mackay, Queensland.

Taxi driver John Smith (played by Neal O'Leary) gets away with having two wives - Barbara (Belinda Patroni) and Mary (Kelly Gregg) in different areas of London because of his irregular working schedule.

But when he is mugged and ends up in hospital, both of his addresses surface, causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate.  Having upset his schedule, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts to explain himself to his wives and two very suspicious police officers - Sergeant Porterhouse (Brian O'Neill) and Sergeant Troughton (Petar Grulovic). He battles to keep his double life from exploding, helped or hindered at every turn by his well-meaning but ineffectual Wimbledon neighbour Stanley (Bill Wall), the irrepressibly camp Bobby (Connor Bashford) who lives upstairs at Streatham, and an overeager Press photographer (a cameo appearance by Bonnie Sammut).

Director Peter Rosier says, “Run for your Wife is in the classic English farce style, full of hilarious confusion and double entendres as the lead character, John Smith, bigamist and taxi driver, stumbles from lie to lie and he tries to prevent his two wives discovering his double life.

“This is a play that I have previously enjoyed acting in years ago with Eltham Little Theatre Company in Victoria and with Darwin Theatre Company and it is a pleasure to now work with Kucom to bring it to the theatregoers of Mackay.

“This is high amongst the funniest of farces and while we are well into rehearsals for our production and the cast almost have their scripts down, we are still having difficulty in restraining them from laughing at their own lines.”
