School Holidays to come alive with The Sound of Music in Perth

Perth’s Regal Theatre will come alive with The Sound of Music during the 2014 July school holidays with the ICW production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, featuring the talents of leading West Australian performers and the full ICW Arts Orchestra and chorus.

Set in Austria at the outbreak of WW11, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the von Trapp family and Maria, a novice nun who is finding the discipline of life in a convent difficult. Maria is sent to be the governess for the seven von Trapp children and finds that their father, a Captain and widower, runs his family like a military operation.

Soprano Stephanie Gooch (pictured) performs the role of Maria. A graduate of the Australian Opera Studio, recently returned from Germany, Stephanie has been a finalist and award winner of many prestigious singing competitions and awards.

She will be joined by actor Ian Cross as Captain von Trapp, whose many credits include Javert in the ICW Production of Les Misérables, veteran actor Igor Sas performing the role of Max and WA Opera singer Nola Formentin as Mother Abbess.

"Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Andrews when she was in Perth,” says Producer and Musical Director Ian Westrip OAM, “such a warm and inspiring person. It was this meeting that convinced me to take a further step and produce The Sound of Music yet again. It is such an excellent book with wonderful melodies and yet another inspired orchestration by Robert Russell Bennett, that it is a joy to work on, with my excellent cast."

The production team also inclludes Director Mark Barford (a graduate of RADA), Assistant Music Director and Chorus Master Jangoo Chapkhana, Choreographer Benjamin Franzen and Set Designer Sara Chirichilli.

Sponsored by Zetta and supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, The ICW Production of The Sound of Music plays from Thurs 10th to Sat 19th July at 7.30- plus matinee performances on Saturday 12th, 19th, Sunday 13th and Wednesday 16th.
