Blue Mountains Musical Society presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street from May 24, 2013.

After 25 years of producing music theatre and concerts in the Springwood Civic Centre, the venue that has come to be known as home to Blue Mountains Musical Society is currently undergoing renovations, leaving them homeless for a few years. The community group has decided to take a big leap and stage their current production of Sweeney Todd in Penrith, at the Joan Sutherland Centre’s Q Theatre.

Our Man in Havana at Javeenbah Theatre (Nerang, Queensland) is something of a cautionary tale: be careful what you lie about because some of it may come true... and people may die.

Written by Graham Greene, and adapted for the stage by Clive Francis, the satirical comedy lampooning an inept British Intelligence Service, MI5, plays from May 24, 2013.

Hairspray: Beehive Musical for Perth

Beehives and 60s fashions are set to fill the stage at Limelight Theatre in Wanneroo (WA) during June. 

Adapted from the original 1988 John Waters movie, Hairspray is set in 1962 Baltimore and follows “pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblad and her dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show.

When her dream comes true, she becomes an overnight celebrity and launches a campaign to let the African-American teens dance with the white kids.

Verbatim Musical: Urban life in 25 words or less

The lives and stories of a diverse group of people representing Brisbane’s urban landscape will be on show in May 2013 with the premiere of Joymas Creative’s verbatim musical theatre production, The 25 Project.

The show is constructed entirely from the words of the general public, cast and other creatives, all of whom have contributed their stories using 25 words or less.

No day but today for Manly Musical Society RENT

Manly Musical Society (NSW) will present Tony, Drama Desk and Pulitzer Prize winning rock musical RENT  (the 9th longest-running musical in Broadway history) at the Star of the Sea Theatre, Manly from May 17 – 25. This iconic show is the society’s 9th since forming in 2009 and President Keith Muir describes it as “the most ambitious yet!”

Stirling Players Premiere Local Comedy-Drama.

During May 2013, Stirling Theatre (WA) presents the premiere of a new play by Stirling Players’ resident playwright, Peter Flanigan, which he describes as a comedy-drama with a few current social issues thrown in for good measure.

Is it possible to “get away from it all”?  Maybe; maybe not. A Country Retreat, written in 2010, is set in a rural area of the south west of WA and presents real characters in believable situations; a play for our time.

Urinetown The Musical: A Privilege to Pee!

The Regals Musical Society (NSW) is producing the award winning satirical musical Urinetown from May 17 – 25. After premiering Off Broadway in May 2001, the musical transferred to Broadway, where it played for two and a half years, winning three Tony Awards including Best Book and Best Score.

Eurobeat Prepares Penrith for Eurovision

Penrith Musical Comedy Company (NSW) presents Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision at the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre this May. Fresh of their sold out season of Hairspray last year the company wants their audience to come and laugh out loud at this take-off of Eurovision, ahead of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest mid-May.
