Superstar in Sydney’s South

Superstar in Sydney’s South

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock musical extravaganza Jesus Christ Superstar is Engadine Musical Society’s May 2014 production at Sutherland Entertainment Centre, following recent successes including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice take a different view on the final days of Jesus of Nazareth in their rock opera. Jesus Christ Superstar, which tells the story from Judas Iscariot's (Daniel O’Connell) point of view, is a humanized look at the last days of Jesus (James Gander) taking much of their inspiration from the often glossed over passages of the Gospels. More than anything else, Jesus Christ Superstar is a powerful piece of theatre, presenting a different view of the man who would have to give up his earthly existence to accept his destiny.

This production is based around a concept designed by the team of Meg Day, Alan Steedman and Craig Nhobbs.

“For us we want everyone to have a powerful response to this show regardless of their religious persuasion.” Director Meg Day explains that despite the story being thousands of years old, the adversities faced by the characters and the themes explored in the show (friendship, struggle, loyalty, betrayal, fear and hope) are universal.

“We have an amazing cast who are doing a marvellous job in bring these characters and their struggles to life. We are fortunate to have three very talented stars, James (Jesus), Daniel (Judas) and Tanya Boyle (Mary) have such power and control that really allows them to capture the emotion in the song – there have already been so many spine-tingling moments in rehearsals!”
