Urinetown: to pee, or not to pee

Urinetown: to pee, or not to pee

When Shakespeare penned the phrase "What's in a name?" four centuries ago he would scarcely have imagined a musical by the name of Urinetown by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollman.

Whilst the title of the triple Tony Award winning Urinetown: the Musical may be a little 'off-putting', Dural Musical Society (NSW) is promising to deliver a night of good clean satirical fun from May 16th through 31st 2014.

At DMS rehearsals are in full swing for their May 2014 production of the 2001 Broadway musical, set in a futuristic city plagued by a 20-year drought, where water has become so scarce that private toilets have become outlawed. At the mercy of a single corporation which has a monopoly on the town's public amenities, citizens must pay extortionate fees to carry out their most private and basic of needs. Urinetown: the Musical sees us in one of the poorest neighbourhoods of town where, out of the poverty, a hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the tyrannical regime.

Urinetown: the Musical will be directed by Eddie Bruce, with choreography by Kate O'Neill and musical direction by Leo Dent. They have pulled together a cast which provides a real mix of old and new members of the society. Hero and heroine Nicholas Gilbert and Stephanie Quaglia team with another regular in Brendon Dart who plays the corporate mogul whose only interest is the accumulation of money and more money, while Cheralee Heynes plays her first major role with DMS. The cast also features Julian Floriano, Ben Freeman, Keira Glasgow-McLean, Laura Murdocca, Gus Lamas, Ian McLean and Marvyn Lenders.

Visit Dural’s Urinetown, where "to pee, or not to pee,” is the distinctly un-Shakespearean question.
