Wartime Drama Expresses Dreams of Freedom

Wartime Drama Expresses Dreams of Freedom

At Epping in NSW, Theatre on Chester’s third production for 2015 is Over the Moon And Far Away, written by Carla Moore, teacher, director, NIDA playwright graduate and life member of the Theatre on Chester.

Based on the historical experience of many women interned during World War II, Over the Moon and Far Away takes us on a year long journey, from December 1943 to December 1944, in one women’s POW camp somewhere in Java.  It’s about women who escaped Singapore and Malaysia on boats only to be torpedoed, then picked up 24 hours later from the sea to be brought to camps on shore.  It is about women who had no skills other than their ability to socialize before the war, who dug deep and became innovative survivors.

Through the eyes of 14 year old Emelia, audiences experience the life of Australian nurses, English and Dutch expats and local Indonesian women. Emelia learns not just about survival, but about the human spirit, love, friendship and religion, and what it means to be a woman.

During three and half years of deprivation and incarceration, these women became innovative survivors keeping their children safe; women who looked at the moon every night and dreamed of Freedom.
