Writer’s Block: Javeenbah Theatre Premieres Local Play

Opening Javeenbah Theatre’s 2016 season is the world premiere of Writer’s Block, a quirky tale of frustration and hallucination from local Gold Coast writer and director, Kellie Eatock.

Hitting the Javeenbah stage from the 29th of January – 13th February, is the first full production of Writer’s Block.

The play follows the story of author Jane (Libby Bancroft), who has discovered a way to make hitting the ‘brick wall’ a little less tedious. Battling with wildly vocal and immensely frustrating hallucinations in the form of her two main characters, Jane sets about to write a play with all the romance she lacks in her own life; a drama about a young wounded British soldier seeking refuge with a German girl in the midst of WWII.

Among her frustration Jane battles a crush on her imaginary leading man (played by local theatre regular Sean Curran), an unexplained dislike of her fictional leading lady (Cassidy Mackie), a very real romance budding with the divorced "boy next door" (Adam Hellier) and a love-hate relationship with her sister and lodger, Kate (Emily Scanlon).

Set against a 1940's and modern backdrop, Writer's Block is a comical romance with a hint of drama that voices some of the processes occurring in a writer's head as she pieces together the scattered thoughts of her overactive imagination to ultimately produced that perfect work of art...she hopes.

Writer and director Kellie Eatock said Writer’s Block offers a unique insight into the mind of a writer.

Writer's Block is a unique comedy that will take audiences on a journey back and forth between Jane’s imagination and her reality; between 1940’s Germany and modern day Australia. It should appeal to all audiences,“ she said.

“I like to think that it offers a good look inside the mind of a writer, deep down we are all a little quirky.”

A shorter one act version of Writer’s Block won the Dolphin Award at the Gold Coast Little Theatre for Most Outstanding One Act Play in 2013 and first time director, Eatock is looking forward to showcasing the full production on Javeenbah’s stage.

“Directing has been a lot of fun so far, I have an amazing cast who all have so much experienceperforming and who have brought their own incredible spark to the characters,” she said.
