Barbie The Musical: Get Your Sparkle On

Barbie The Musical opens its limited Australian tour with a Pink Carpet Premiere in Melbourne on April 5, 2014. Coral Drouyn is going to be there.

Okay…I’m NOT “A Barbie Girl, in a Barbie World” but if I had been younger I would have been, and I had daughters and grand-daughters and neices (and even a couple of nephews!) who were. Barbie is part of our pop culture, our history and our heritage and, like it or not, the girl whose waist is proportionately so tiny she would snap in half when she walked, is here to stay. Barbie isn’t just a plaything (to Ken or anyone else)…she’s an icon. The wonder is that it took so long for there to be a musical for the three or more generations who know and love her.

This is a whistle-stop tour for Barbie The Musical….only three days in each capital city… so you don’t want to miss it. The costumes are simply GORGEOUS, I’ve seen them and they’re a riot of colour (one thing about Barbie, she has always had extraordinary fashion taste). Kobi Rozenfeld – as director and choreographer - is the brains behind the production and his credentials are impeccable, including working with esteemed artists like Beyonce. The show takes place on a Hollywood sound stage and a storyline about Barbie and her best friend Teresa making a new movie. Chelsea Bernier looks as if she was born to be Barbie…except she’s a real Musical Theatre triple threat. There are songs we know from the Barbie movies plus new music from Broadway composer Robbie Roth, played against sets by Stanley A Meyer, renowned for his award winning designs for Beauty and The Beast and Elton John’s Aida. But it’s Barbie we want to see…in all her wonderful whacky political incorrectness.
