Circle Mirror Transformation.

Circle Mirror Transformation.

Annie Baker sets her critically acclaimed play Circle Mirror Transformation in an acting class to channel the uncertainty, curiosity and suffering of five ordinary people with a lot of emotional baggage. Directed by MTC Associate Director Aidan Fennessy, it opens on Friday 19 August 2011 at 7pm at the MTC Theatre, Lawler Studio.

At an under-subscribed, six-week community acting class, a student, three adults and their teacher go through their exercises designed to loosen their bodies, strengthen their voices and liberate their imaginations. Yet as the weeks pass, the participants discover that something utterly transformative is being created between them.

The cosy MTC Lawler Studio perfectly lends itself to Annie Baker’s hilarious and thoughtful drama that captures five individuals at cross-roads in their lives, where they expose their secret desires and hidden insecurities to each other, and betray their newly formed relationships, in the guise of creative expression.

Circle Mirror Transformation marks the Australian premiere of Annie Baker’s most popular work to date. She is an American playwright who is making waves off–Broadway for her hyper-naturalistic plays set in small fictional towns in America. In 2010, Annie Baker was awarded the first ever New York Drama Critics’ Circle’s Emerging Talent Special Citation. Circle Mirror Transformation also won Baker a 2009 OBIE Award for Best New American Play and the 2009 Drama Desk Award for Wednesday August 10.Outstanding Play. Other plays by Baker include The Aliens, Body Awareness and Nocturama.
