Robyn Nevin, Pamela Rabe and Aidan Fennessy to program the 2012 MTC Season

Chairman of the Melbourne Theatre Company Board, Derek Young has announced that the 2012 Melbourne Theatre Company Season will be created by Robyn Nevin, Pamela Rabe and Aidan Fennessy.

On behalf of the MTC Board I am delighted to announce, that we have appointed Robyn Nevin, Pamela Rabe and MTC Associate Director Aidan Fennessy to program our 2012 MTC Season. This exciting collaboration of such a multitalented and respected group of artists, who are well- known and loved by our Subscribers,  bring decades of industry experience in directing, acting, writing and programming to the Company.

'They are an outstanding group of artists each with their own unique skills and attributes and we are sure that they will continue to bring our audience the very best classic and contemporary Australian and International theatre on offer. Over the next six monthsthe group will meet regularly to program our 2012 Season which will be officially launched in September’ said MTC Chairman Derek Young.

MTC Artistic Director Simon Phillips said ‘When I think of the pleasure that Robyn, Pamela, and Aidan have given MTC audiences over the years, I’m completely confident that between them they can rustle up an MTC-type season that will delight our audiences. With the board’s decision to wait a year for the ‘right person for the job’, the task of conceiving an interim season needed to be filled by people with an intimate knowledge of the MTC style and the tastes and predilections of our Subscribers. Aidan, as my current Associate Director, has helped put together the last three MTC seasons, while Robyn has run her own Company, so she knows what it’s all about!  Pamela has had such a long association with the Company as one of our favourite actors and now as a director, so they’re in a fantastic position to curate a one-off special season before Brett’s arrival.  And of course the MTC repertoire committee, which I’ll continue to sit on this year, will be doing everything in its power to assist them.’

Robyn Nevin said,‘I am delighted and somewhat surprised to find myself programming MTC's 2012 Season with my good colleagues Pamela Rabe and Aidan Fennessy. After many years as Associate Director with both STC and MTC, then Artistic Director of QTC followed by 9 years leading STC, I thought  I had closeted my programming shoes forever'...until this invitation from the MTC Board which I accepted with relish. Pam and Aidan and I are excited about 2012 and already talking up a storm’.

Pamela Rabe said, ‘It is a great honour to be chosen to be part of the artistic team who will be bringing MTC 2012 Season to fruition for Melbourne audiences and for the company I love.  I have huge respect for both Robyn and Aidan - I’ve collaborated with them many times over the years - and I am very much looking forward to working with them again in this new and exciting capacity’.

Aidan Fennessy said, ‘I have such admiration for both Pamela and Robyn as artists that the opportunity to engage creatively with them both to program the MTC 2012 Season is a rare thrill. I look forward to discovering and unearthing the best theatrical pieces on offer for our audiences’.

Robyn Nevin, Pamela Rabe and MTC Associate Director Aidan Fennessy will begin to program the MTC 2012 Season immediately. The 2012 Season will be officially launched at 9pm on Tuesday 27 September 2011.

Last month Brett Sheehy was appointed as MTC’s new Artistic Director. Brett starts with the Company on a part-time capacity at the beginning of 2012 to program the 2013 Season and will take up a full-time position with the company on the 1 November 2012.
