It’s fair to say that for 20 years or so John Wood was a household name all around the country; first for his role as the irascible magistrate Rafferty in Rafferty’s Rules and then as Mt Thomas’ sergeant Tom Croydon in Blue Heelers. No actor has made a bigger impact in TV drama than John. But it’s also fair to say that theatre was his first love.

Opera Australia Season 2016

Over the last 60 years Opera Australia has grown to become Australia's largest and busiest arts company.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary year, and in tribute to one of the world’s great buildings, Opera Australia will present Sydney Opera House - The Opera (The Eighth Wonder), outside on the Opera House forecourt with Utzon’s renowned white sails as the background.

ENSEMBLE THEATRE 2016 SEASON

Twisted Broadway 2015

Gender-bending musical theatre blockbuster Twisted Broadway returns to Melbourne for one-night-only at Arts Centre Melbourne, State Theatre on Monday 17 August, 2015.

The annual charity concert features internationally-acclaimed music theatre talent singing songs originally penned for the opposite gender in a one-off night of show-stopping, gender-bending entertainment.

Having raised over $80,000 for those living with and touched by HIV/AIDS, in 2015 the evening’s hosts Kate Ceberano and Eddie Perfect will lead the gauntlet towards $100,000 mark.

Dame Julie Andrews to Direct 60th Anniversary My Fair Lady in Sydney

Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini AM and leading theatre producer John Frost AM will present a brand new production of Lerner and Loewe’s masterpiece My Fair Lady at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House in 2016, celebrating the iconic musical’s 60th anniversary. My Fair Lady will be directed by world-renowned actor and director Dame Julie Andrews with choreography by Tony Award-winning Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, The King and I, South Pacific).

Singin’ in the Rain Cast Announced

The full Australian cast of the 'splash-hit' West End stage production Singin’ in the Rain has been announced. The production will open May 2016 at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, followed by a season from July at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre before touring to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

2015 HELPMANN AWARDS

The 2015 Helpmann Awards were presented at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on Monday 27 July, on the set of Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Les Misérables, in a ceremony hosted by Todd McKenney.

Les Misérables, The Perth International Festival, and the Brisbane Baroque Festival were the big winners of the 2015 Helpmann Awards.

La Boite Turns 90 With Style

Boys get out your blazers and boaters, and girls put on your flapper dresses and cloche hats and all Charleston on down to Kelvin Grove for the party of the year. Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre turns 90 in July, and to celebrate it’s throwing a ball in keeping with 1925 - the year the company started. Peter Pinne looks back at the company’s remarkable history.
