Into the Woods plus Hip Hop Bye Bye Birdie and Annie Films

Broadwayworld.com reports that director Rob Marshall is working on a new screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim / James Lapine musical Into The Woods for Disney.

Lapine is currently working on the script, and Marshall expects the film to include new songs by Sondheim.

Marshall has previously directed the screen versions of Nine, Chicago and the Disney version of Annie.

Musical theatre fans, of course, are already familiar with the recording of the original Broadway cast was videotaped for PBS' "Great Performances" series and available on DVD.

Broadway.com reports that Adam Shankman, director of Hairspray, and soon to direct Rock of Ages, is developing a hip hop version of Bye Bye Birdie.

The same article reports this isn’t the only musical up for a hip hop version, with Will Smith and Jay-Z working on a hip hop Annie, to star Smith’s daughter Willow in the title role.
