Written and directed by Mollie Earnshaw. Hayman Theatre, Curtin University, Bentley, WA. March 18-23, 2018

The new short play, 21, written and directed by Mollie Earnshaw, is presented as part of Curtin University’s Sunday Night and Lunchtime Theatre series.

A very nicely written relationship drama, it tells of a young man Jimmy who contracts penile cancer. Despite the serious subject matter, there is lovely use of light and shade and beautifully drawn likeable characters. Mollie Earnshaw’s writing of dialogue is very clever, especially her use of rapid patter.

Central character James or Jimmy is played with depth and sensitivity by Max Gipson, whose strong performance is even more impressive given his 24 hour turn around from his previous production Rock of Ages. His girlfriend of sorts is very nicely portrayed by Casey McMaster, who played the dilemma faced by Sienna well.

Jimmy’s sister Penny is a beautifully written role and played to its full effect by Amber Gilmour. Taylor “Mutta” Beilby performs triple duty in three smaller roles, with his unsympathetic doctor being particularly nicely constructed.

Sophie Paice provides effectively chosen sound, while also stage managing. Lights on the triptych set were well designed by Jack Bengough. Kiri Siva’s costumes are functional and appropriate with some clever touches. Dramaturgy was provided by Lizzie Howard.

A clever, nicely executed production that deserves further life. Congratulations to all involved.
