Albert Nobbs

Albert Nobbs
By Gordon Steel. Javeenbah Theatre Co., Nerang, Gold Coast. Director: Jim Dickson. 23rd Nov to 7th Dec, 2013.

You just can’t keep a good man down! Mr Gold Coast Theatre (octogenarian Joel Beskin) is currently appearing in the title role in Jim Dickson’s production of Albert Nobbs.

The comedy, set in the north of England, has “stuck-in-a-rut” Albert and the 3 women in his life: his wife Connie (Marie Dickson), her best friend Rose (Gillian Crowe) and neighbour Alice (Wendy Spencer), living mundane lives until the day Connie dies in an accident and the two friends start to play a bigger part in Albert’s life. Connie continues to control Albert’s life from beyond the grave.

It’s very easy to identify with one’s own circumstances as the war of words ensues. Poor Albert doesn’t stand a chance. Each of the women is strong and very convincing in their characters and the ever-present north English accents added to the atmosphere.

Joel’s been involved with the Theatre for over 70 years and is a Life Member of the Gold Coast Theatre Alliance and was one of the original inductees into the Association of Community Theatre’s Hall of Fame.

If you want a good laugh, visit Albert Nobbs.
