Ballet Revolución

Ballet Revolución
National Tour Australia & New Zealand. ATA Allstar Artists Production. Choreography: Aaron Cash, Rocian Gonzalez Chavez. Musical Director: Osmar Salazar Hernandez. State Theatre, Sydney, June 25 – 29; The Arts Centre Gold Coast, July 3 – 6; Arts Centre, Melbourne, July 17 – 20; Crown Theatre, Perth, July 31 – Aug 3.

Sensual, energizing and passionate ~ Ballet Revolución, direct from Cuba, is a fusion of ballet, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance that hits you between the eyes. The skill, agility and strength of these dancers is truly fantastic! This is high energy, passionate dance at it’s best.

The show has twenty professional dancers who take us through a range of numbers from fast-paced group hip-hop numbers right through to balletic slow, sensual duos and trios.

The dancers perform in front of a group of eight musicians and singers from Havana who pump out well-known Number 1 hits from Shakira, Prince, J-Lo, Ricky Martin and more. Having the live music and singing on stage combined with the dancers really add to this show and give it that extra dimension.

There is no storyline, comment or political statement to this show; it’s purely passionate performers teamed with bopping pop songs. I’m assuming the ‘Revolución’ aspect is referring to the fact that they bend the rules with traditional classical ballet choreography and music and blend it with other dance styles and choreograph it to a backdrop of popular hits.

The dance performances are high quality and strong for the entirety of this show. I want to highlight that the men are particularly impressive; sometimes in dance companies it’s the other way round but Ballet Revoluciónreally showcases some incredible male dancers with impeccable ballet technique who literally have the diversity to jump across many dance styles.

Ballet Revolución has had sold out seasons in London, Paris, Zurich, Berlin and more and returns to Australia for the second time after they premiered here in 2011. If you’re after an upbeat, dynamic, powerful and fun night out I highly recommend this show; it will leave you buzzing and pulling out some dance moves on the way home!
