Bear with Me

Bear with Me
Windmill Theatre. Space Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre. July 7 – 19, 2015.

The key to children’s theatre is simplicity; words and concepts that are easily understood. Bear with Me is a delightful introduction to theatre for the young ones in the family. Songs that are easily learnt encourage the audience to join in, thereby promoting confidence in their abilities. Creative play works their young minds and the faces of the many children is testament to the fact the show is working. Add to the mix the security of everyone’s favourite teddy bear and you have an interactive production that is both challenging and entertaining.

Windmill Theatre have been producing quality contemporary theatre since 2002 and they continue to be successful both nationally and internationally. They have joined forces with writer David Meggarity to produce this homage to teddy bears in the form of a musical. A celebration of our furry friends and the unique bond that we share with these cuddly creatures is the catalyst for most of the songs performed. Encouraged to join in with song and dance was welcomed by all that attended. Actors Tyrone and Wesley were engaging and interacted with the young audience with ease.

I was lucky enough to have my 5 year old friend next to me and she made it clear she enjoyed it; however she did mention her desire for it to be longer, a sentiment I shared. At only 40 minutes long, I fear some parents may have thought they were short changed. All things considered though, this show carries a charm that has you humming the tunes all the way home.
