Billy Liar

Billy Liar
By Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall. Javeenbah Theatre, Nerang, Gold Coast. Director: Dawn China. July 21st – August 5th, 2017

If you are a fan of 60’s music then don’t miss Javeenbah’s latest offering – Billy Liar, directed by Dawn China – it’s a real walk down memory lane right into living rooms of that decade – great set!

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think that the same premise could apply to humour and comedies – it seems I don’t get black comedy – well at least, not compared to many others in the audience.  And I have to say, having members of the audience who don’t hold back on loud laughter can really lift the entire audience.

Billy Liari s a very slick production, with great timing and excellent character portrayal.  I must make special mention of Virginia Leaver, as the rambling, tottering Grandma, and Peter Maden of the ‘frustrated father with a short fuse’ variety.

Good performances too from Adam Hellier, in the title role as Billy, and Sherree Halliwell as the orange eating fiancée Barbara.

Which brings me to my only frustration of the night – why was she eating oranges?  I waited for a punch-line, but alas, I’m none the wiser.  Like I said, I obviously don’t get black comedy. But it was an enjoyable evening out.
