The Boy from Oz

The Boy from Oz
Book by Nick Enright. Music by Peter Allen. Koorliny Arts Centre and the Kwinana Industries Council. Directed by Brad Tudor. Koorliny Arts Centre, WA. April 5 - 20, 2019

The Boy From Oz bursts with outstanding performances in a very slick production by Koorliny Arts Centre and the Kwinana Industries Council.

Jesse Angus becomes Peter Allen in a dynamic and deep performance with very little down time. His energy, excellent voice and vibrance keep the show exciting throughout. While Jesse is outstanding, this is much more than a one-man-show, with bravura performances at almost every corner.

Young Peter Allen is played beautifully by Angus Thomson, who commands the stage with each appearance. Natalie Burbage works expertly with both Peters, in a truly charming performance as Peter’s mother Marion Woolnough.

Rachel Monamy is Perth’s own Judy Garland, and playing Judy for (at least) the third time (in several different shows), we continue to be enthralled. Althea Sartorelli also reprises her role, and is a convincing, dynamic Liza Minnelli. Relative newcomer Jordan Jackson delivers a heartfelt and genuine portrayal of Peter’s partner Greg Connell.

Backing singers Karen, Sheena, and Linelle (Ruth Bennett, Shanice Tudor and Janine Upson) work well throughout, and perhaps benefit most from the wonderful costume design throughout from director Brad Tudor. They are also wonderful models of the gorgeous wigs - Tamed by Trent.

Murray Petrone is excellent and Producer Dee Anthony, with Casey Edwards lovely as Valerie Anthony - and a myriad of cameos in a very busy show. Great work in brief appearances from Rp Van Der Westhuizen - a lovely young Brian Henderson, Katie E Williams as Josie, Grant O’Niel as Dick Woolnough, and from Lincoln Tapping and Colin Howe as Chris and Wally Bell.

A twenty strong ensemble are kept very busy throughout. The singing is strong in every number and the execution of choreographer Allen Blachford’s innovative routines is top tier. Perhaps our only disappointment is that the nature of the curtain call does not give us the chance to really give everyone the accolades they deserve.

Musical Director Taui Pinker leads a tight ten piece ensemble who have precision and pizazz.

Almost sold out on its first weekend and attracting a great deal of buzz, this is deservedly Perth’s hottest ticket at the moment. Move quickly to book or you will miss out.
