Cars and Girls
Alexis Dubus. Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tuxedo Cat, 17 Wills Street, Melbourne April 7th – 20th, 2014.

UK comedian Alexis Dubus is more than just a comic – he’s a skilled writer, a poet, a storyteller. Perhaps that’s why the audience was in his own words “one of the quietest he’s had”, they weren’t quite sure what they’d stumbled into when Dubus began his show and it became apparent the entire thing was in verse.  They quickly settled into the groove, however, hard not to when the storyteller is as affable and engaging as Dubus. So – in a nutshell, expect a nicely crafted, beautifully written poetic tale of a thirty something man whose adventures romantic take him around the world -more often than not by truck or van with friends or women of a hippyish disposition - meeting characters along the way both stereotypical and unique.  From the ‘banghouses” of Spain, to light sabre battles in the desert at “The Burn” or Burning Man Festival, once you’re in the swing you should allow the meter of the verse, the spark of the tale and the exuberance of its teller to transport you for an hour. This charming fable like show is a tale of a Peter Pan, unwilling to “put away childish things” whose travels and loves lost lead him to find “the one” where he least expects it. Along with a little “nudity”, tales of some serious amounts of hash and a bean festival drink not for the faint hearted, Dubus will deliver serious smiles, if not belly laughs, and a gentle joyous fable that will stick in your mind.
