CJ Delling - Funny Bits

CJ Delling - Funny Bits
Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The Bull and Bear Tavern, 23 March - 3 April, 2016

Often, if a comedian is not cutting edge, profane or crude, it is assumed they don’t have much to say. CJ Delling is the opposite of this: she isn’t cutting edge, profane or crude, and she has a lot to say. Sweet, goofy and funny, you'll walk out of her show feeling as if you've made a new friend.

German born and residing in Australia for a decade, Delling tells us anecdotal stories of her experiences in Australia. She avoids the typical Teutonic jokes of accents and Germans with no sense of humour. Her comedy is self-deprecating story-telling that gently engages with topics such as feminism, gender equality and consensual sex. Her analogy of tea and consensual sex is hilarious and clever. She intertwines and weaves us a tale of relatable incidents, stories and punch lines. She is at her best with off the cuff jokes and audience interaction.

Some moments do fall flat and feel contrived, but perhaps this is more related to cultural rhythm and language than comedic issues. Most importantly, there is joy and warmth in her performance and she clearly loves what she does, you’ll be charmed.
