Company
By Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. Director: Dannielle Ashtom. Old Mill Theatre, South Perth (WA). April 1 to 16, 2011

COMPANY is centered "around the extremely good-looking Bobby who, after celebrating his 35th birthday, still can’t commit to a steady relationship although wants to share his life with someone." Bobby's friends, five couples and three girlfriends, feature in a series of linked vignettes.

On an ice-cream hued set, Scott Burns as Bobby, clad in black, takes centre stage in the area between his couple friends, decked beautifully in 70s pastel ensemble. This is probably to emphasise his lack of attachment and commitment, but it creates a darkness in an otherwise bright production.

Julia Hern and Tim How added wonderful humour. Matthew Kiely and Cicely Binford created excellent physical comedy. Charles McComb and Lyn Atterton added sophistication and elegance. David Wallace and Vanessa Vance were a delightful couple, while Casey Edwards, working nicely with Gareth Jay, created one of the highlights of the production with her amazingly highly paced "I'm Not Getting Married Today."

Emma Davis, Rachel Monamy and Bonnie Coyle were nicely chosen as Bobby's girlfriends.

Matt Austin's musical direction is precise and the music was beautifully delivered, while there was little to disappoint technically, either in music or execution. A live band added energy and was tight.

An enjoyable production that fit nicely into Old Mill's tiny performance space.

Kimberley Shaw.
