This splendid mocumentary of a family in crisis after their young son’s death in a car smash is an inspired creation as an educational attempt to curb young drivers’ deaths in similar circumstances.
The title is unlikely to attract regular theatregoers, yet the topic and the performances are top class.
Two lead actors, Melanie Zanetti, listed in the programme as Natasha, (sister to the road victim, who also portrays her mother, her brother who was killed in the accident, and well-meaning, caring community members who arrive with food and condolences – ‘the huggers’, whom she hates), and Bob Baines, who portrays Grumpop (as well as many other male characters close to the action) carry the piece. Both principals deserve major kudos for focussing the action and the audience’s sympathises.
They are supported at each tour venue by a chorus of drama students from local high schools; a clever ploy! What an opportunity to introduce aspiring actors to the real performance world where subject matter has such clout, and to attract their school supporters. I hope their gratis efforts are reciprocated by school groups in their area.
Director Julian Louis, and set, soundscape and lighting designers Justin Nardella, Matt Hill and Verity Hampson respectively, deserve top credits for creating an effective and adaptable performance space for touring.
