Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision

Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision
By Craig Christie and Andrew Patterson. Gold Coast Little Theatre. Director/Choreographer : Rhylee Nowell. Jan 29 – Feb 26, 2011.

The audience had to pass through barbed wire barriers to enter the theatre, where they were greeted by “army clad” officials handing out survival kits with everything one needs to witness Eurobeat; your national flag to wave, your voting paper and most of all, your “clapper” to encourage your country’s contestants. We were then marshalled into the theatre for the experience of a lifetime.

Rhylee Nowell and her team of Lucy McIntosh (Musical Director) and Frog Johnson (Assistant Director) didn’t miss a trick in bringing all the excitement of the Eurovision Song Contest to the Gold Coast.

The evening was co-hosted by Boyka (Jess Papst – with more costume changes that a Myer Fashion Parade) and Sergei (Andy MacFarlane) who kept the evening flowing with their banter whilst introducing each act. The ensemble had plenty of scope to display their vast array of talent to the enjoyment of audience. Everyone was a star!

At the conclusion of Act One, the audience was instructed to vote and then spent an anxious 20 minutes while the votes were counted, with “live” TV crosses to each country as their scores were announced.

The winner on the night was Germany (pictured) and they received the “tacky” mirror ball trophy, much to the delight of their supporters.

What a Hoot!
