Everything Must Go

Everything Must Go
Written and performed by Rachel Leary. Presented with the support of the Tasmanian Theatre Company Cascade Indie Program. Theatre Royal Backspace (Hobart). Director: Damian Callinan. November 7 – 11, 2102.

Times are changing, and Nancy Browne, comic creation of Rachel Leary, must make sense of her shifting world. The quirky play Everything Must Go has evolved, over almost five years, out of a series of comedy sketches performed by Rachel Leary. It has received wide praise from critics and comic peers during its seasons at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Rachel was a finalist of Victorian Raw Comedy in 2007. The change process and its fallout are the subject matter of the play currently being performed in Tasmania, at the Theatre Royal “Backspace” in Hobart, as part of the Tasmanian Theatre Company Cascade Indie Program. Everything Must Go, directed by Damian Callinan,is set in Huonville, and is created and performed by ex-pat Tasmanian Rachel Leary. Rachel grew up in Hobart and spent 30 years living there before moving to Melbourne. Nancy Browne is having a garage sale. There will be treasure there like you really can’t imagine! Eccentric and reclusive, Nancy has lived in the same house, the same Tasmanian Valley all her life, but now the valley is changing - farms are being sold and city people - tree-changers- with new ideas are moving in. The wider world has encroached and Nancy has to make sense of it. And she has to move house. Everything Must Go is a comedic and poignant portrayal of a misfit finding her way. Nancy Browne is hilarious, ridiculous and very touching – a fabulously unique Australian character. Expect laughter, sadness, and laughter. After the Tasmanian season finishes, Rachel will tour Everything Must Go in country Victoria, where similar characters are likely to relate to Nancy Browne.
