Is there such a thing as a Magnum Opus for an actor? If there is, then Paul Treasure 's performance in Murray Music and Drama Club's Fiddler On The Roof may qualify.

Paul Treasure as Tevye was outstanding. There was a lovely sense that this was foremost a dramatic role, and Tevye was beautifully acted, with the Independent Theatre Association President bringing a fascinating truth to this confused, conflicted, flawed but loveable father. Paul Treasure also has the vocal depth to shine in this role, singing superbly.

Cat Baxter delivered strongly acted support as wife Golde, with the five lively daughters - Sian Dhu (a beautiful presence), Suzy Wiseman (a thoughtful performance), Kerry Smith (a welcome Australian debut), Cassandra Power and Corinna Gosby, all giving lovely performances.

In a cast of fifty-two, audiences perhaps can't expect uniformly brilliant performances, but for the most part, the show was well cast and performances were strong.

Darren Bilston's Motel was particularly strong vocally, Luke Pisano, as Perchick , is a strong developing talent and one to watch, Peter Bonner was a sympathetic Lazar Wolfe and Lea Tunbridge was a delightful Yente, to mention but a few.

Choreography, mostly by director Carole Dhu, was well chosen and nicely executed, especially by the young men, and the bottle dance was very well performed. Chava's ballet, also featuring young Maren Gosby (with Chrissy Treg and Maren's own choreography) was particularly moving and a fitting accompaniment to Paul Treasure's hauntingly beautiful singing.

Costumes by Cathy Puzey (women) and Tammy Peckover (men) were appropriate and accurate and the set simple and solid with well chosen properties.

The nine piece band played very well under the leadership of Josh Haines and the sound (Mike Rogers) was well balanced in a difficult venue. Vocally, this was a very strong show.

While Paul Treasure's performance was a highlight, Fiddler On The Roof was an impressive production throughout, and deserved its sell-out season.
