Finding the Silence

Finding the Silence
Casus Circus Première. Performance Space, Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. 16 – 23 August 2014

Visually spectacular, physically stunning, this new show is destined to amaze overseas media just as its predecessor, KNEE DEEP, did.

Deceptively simple, the continuous sequence of amazing solo feats, duos, trios and foursomes is performed by just four skilled artists:  Emma Serjeant, Jesse Scott, Lachlan McAulay and Vincent van Berkel.

The title comes from that momentary pause artists take to breathe, relax and focus in silence before executing dangerous feats of skill with elegance and grace. Director, Jesse Scott, explains in his notes: ‘In that moment of solitude you are truly alive and aware, defying danger, fear, gravity.’

There are moments of sheer playfulness. For example, take a stool with legs inset perhaps 20 cm from each end and begin thinking ‘What if …?’ The possibilities are amazing as they proceed to show us. They apply the same explorations to each other’s bodies, climbing up them, over them, hanging off them, building three-high towers. They also work with a trapeze and vertical rope, planks and whatever is at hand - child’s play in the hands of clever adults who understand the dangers and how to circumvent them.

Backed by David Carberry’s relaxing sound score they captivate us as they explore as many as a hundred impressive unexpected circus tricks. Can the human body really achieve such amazing skills? Of course, Casus showed us!
