Glittergrass

Glittergrass
Fringe Wives Club. Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Beckett Theatre, Malthouse. Mar 28 – Apr 21, 2019

A feminist, mind-bending hootenanny rocks the Malthouse at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The magisterially talented and zany Fringe Wives Club are back to entertain and enlighten us, as we shake our booties to the ground with their fabulous new show Glittergrass.

It does not get any better than this; crowned cabaret queens winning Adelaide Fringe Best Cabaret and the Edinburgh Fringe Spirit award last year. Recently adding two new members, the all inclusive team of five - Victoria Falconer, Tessa Waters, Rowena Hutson, Laura Frew and Sharnema Nougar - offer an individualistic, idiosyncratic and extraordinary presentation of original songs, storytelling, slapstick comedy and a toe tapping live soundtrack inspired by folk, country and bluegrass music, jam packed with fiddle, banjo, ukulele, saw, washboard, fiddle, and accompanied by their own live band on drums and double bass. How good is that!

Sexy, sassy and unrelenting raunchy attitude, they give a big shout out to the unheard female voices of the past, heralding the lady bushranger Jessie Hickman, unshackling the patriarchal rule and equal pay for women. They claim the rights to ‘third wave intersectional feminism’ and forge ahead till ‘feminism is all done’.

No holds barred, these feisty sequin clad feminists are the real McCoy.

They are a real hoot and l highly recommend this amazingly entertaining show.
