Hard Sell

Hard Sell
A circus variety showcase from NICA’s 2019 graduating class. Presented by NICA National Circus Centre, 39-59 Green St, Prahran. 18 - 21 September, 2019.

Hard Sell is contextualised as form of auctioning of circus talent, where the performers are determined to outshine their competitors in the hope of being selected by talent scouts. The idea of creating a showcase which focuses on the pressure and importance of the graduating class performances is ingenious. This provides a great structure for the individual artists to own the stage and test their talents to the fullest.

The event is hosted by MC Mitch Jones (Australia’s Got Talent 2019, Autocannibal) whose subversive appearance, humour and wit highlights the high expectations placed on the performers. Tro Griffiths on Straps opens the showcase with a sensational act that is both complex and breathtaking. His presence on stage is graceful and arresting and this sets the tone for the entire show.

This quality is sustained in each act but other highlights include Hannah Richards and Cassia Jamieson whose Duo Acrobatics incorporated stylised balancing feats with an inventive use of torch light. This results in a delicate and delightful exploration of movement. Lindsey Bowyer’s Aerial Loops could easily be described as mid-air ballet; the grace and finesse of the movements is superb and frequently astonishing. Eric Quast’s use of the Roue Cyr is incredibly stylish and also beautifully matched with music. Stephanie Benson blends gymnastics and performance art giving the acrobatics a very different dimension.

These are just a few examples of the incredible talent that is on offer in this production where lighting, music, colour and movement coincide in a fresh, vibrant and innovative manner. This showcase exudes elegance, and is an impressive collection of dashing and debonair acrobatics. It is also a true testament to the enormous value of industry collaboration and mentorship.
