Killing Time

By Jack Hibberd. Directed by Denis Moore. La Mama Courthouse, 349 Drummond St, Carlton. 9 – 21 May 2023.

Jack Hibberd is an Australian theatrical legend with canonical works such as A Stretch of the Imagination and Dimboola which have contributed to creating an enormous theatrical heritage. His work captures a quintessential Australian nature often highlighting the larrikin and the sometimes less refined aspects of Australian culture. His work evokes the style of both Brecht and Beckett and Killing Time is no exception.

Cavalcade

Begetter & Auteur William Henderson. Wits’ End Presents. The Eleventh Hour, 170 Leicester Street, Fitzroy. 9 – 21 May 2023

Two expressionless men in dustcoats cycle across the stage on a stretch tandem bike.  On the long bar between them, tiny, tiny men in top hats pedal too.  They disappear.  They return, but now they have reversed positions on the bike, and they go in the opposite direction.  They disappear.  Off-stage, there is a loud crash and then a heated argument begins.  The driver has smashed the bike into a wall that is not supposed to be there.  (A metaphor?)  Off-stage, sounds of a crowbar and a jackhammer.  The argument continues on stage.  It is ph

Clyde’s

By Lynn Nottage. Ensemble Theatre, Sydney. Directed by Darren Yap. 5 May – 10 June 2023

It’s extremely unusual for the Ensemble to feature an American play that opened on Broadway only 18 months ago. But ever-on-the-alert play selectors for this excellent Sydney venue have certainly hit the jackpot with Clyde’s, a zippy piece by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

Grease

By Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Stray Cats Theatre Company and MANPAC. Directed by Karen Francis. Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, WA. May 4-7, 2023

The musical Grease retains its eternal popularity with this run, albeit short, but in a huge auditorium, completely sold out. This was a big, bright, and colourful production that had its audience clapping along.

Featuring a mammoth cast of over 70 performers, large band, and a huge production team, this was a show with lots of contributors and a great deal of community interest.

Be More Chill

Music and Lyrics by Joe Iconis. Book by Joe Tracz. Based on the novel by Ned Vizzini. North Shore Theatre Company. Zenith Theatre, Chatswood, NSW. May 5 – 13, 2023

Be More Chill is the musical which made it to Broadway thanks to fan power. An underground viral obsession with the cast album rescued the production which ran for six weeks in New Jersey, chalking up more than a hundred million downloads.

As I looked around the Zenith Theatre, I laid eyes on one of those obsessives, a young member of the audience who was mouthing word for word the lyrics to one of the songs “Michael in the Bathroom”.

Come From Away

By Irene Sankoff and David Hein. Rodney Rigby and Junkyard Dog Productions. Directed by Christopher Ashley. Crown Theatre, Perth WA. May 7-28, 2023

Come From Away, received with a sweeping standing ovation on Opening Night in Perth, is the strongest touring production to grace Perth in many years. On September 11, 2001, 38 planes with 6,579 passengers on board, were stranded in a remote Newfoundland town, population 10,000. The people of Gander opened their schools, churches, homes, and hearts for the “Plane People”. Come From Away is their story.

Several Adelaide companies have significant anniversary years in 2023 and for the Hills Musical Company they have launched their 50 year celebrations by re-mounting the original, and their first production of Kiss Me, Kate. Directed by the well-known and experienced director Hayley Horton, she has gathered together 22 performers and an excellent 14-person orchestra conducted by Ben Stefanoff to present this musical that ran at a little less than three hours. Kiss Me, Kate was originally produced in 1948, and is considered one of Broadway's great treasures.

Happy Days

By Samuel Beckett. Melbourne Theatre Company. Southbank, The Sumner. 1 May – 10 June 2023

Winnie is woman ‘about 50’, buried up to her waist in a mound of earth.  She is awoken by a harsh bell whereupon she begins her daily routines, beginning with a prayer.  She drinks the last of her medicine.  Her toothbrush has lost its bristles.

Mind blowing in every sense! The music, the singing, the imagination, the acting … a total ‘wow’!

This was a concert conceived to captivate! Broadway Hits from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. From shows that helped the world recover from a nasty war. Shows that were transferred from the stage to the silver screen then to television sets in living rooms all over the world. Shows with big orchestras, optimistic stories, wonderful songs … songs that were played again and again from treasured record albums.
