I’m With Stupid

I’m With Stupid
By Chas Dean. Melbourne Comedy Festival. Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets, Collingwood. March 27 – April 10, 2019

After years in the comedy scene as tech support, backup singer and general factotum, journeyman comedian Chas Dean has stepped up to the microphone for his first MICF show I’m With Stupid (A one man show).

Dean has a diffident, affable style, and is clearly comfortable on the tiny downstairs stage at Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets.

Drawing on Dean’s 40-something years on this earth, the show examines what it means to “be clever” (the young Chas’s major ambition, enabled by some truly terrifying nuns), and the price of having a mind that remains curious in a world that increasingly makes no sense at all.

With a series of hilarious anecdotes, razor-sharp observations, and painfully honest personal stories, Dean also looks at the ways in which we all manage to achieve Being With Stupid.

Dean’s delivery was relaxed and delivered plenty of belly laughs, and he was prepared to put in the work to pave the way for some deeply funny pay-offs. Though he occasionally meandered off piste, Dean’s assurance in his gently observational comedy made I’m With Stupid an excellent and highly enjoyable debut show.
