Impromptunes - The Bachela-la-la

Impromptunes - The Bachela-la-la
Fringe World. Directed by Emmet Nichols. Teatro -The Pleasure Garden, Russell Square, Northbridge, WA. Jan 27-Feb 3, 2018

The sexier sister to Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical, The Bachela-la-la is a naughty late night improvised musical based on The Bachelor/The Bachelorette franchise. Aimed at adults, the audience are kept laughing from the time we meet the contestants until the moment that a ring is placed on the winner’s finger.

There is a more obvious format than its stablemate. As those familiar with the TV series will know, you are guaranteed to have cocktail parties, rose ceremonies and a variety of dates until the final decision is made. Having said that, nearly everything else is improvised, based on suggestions made by the audience before the show. The host, Osher, is played with consummate charm by Emmet Nichols, but the line-up of contestants varies from show to show.

The “episode” I saw featured Sergio, Sex God, video game enthusiast and lover of cheese, played beautifully by Morgan Phillips as he met a variety of lovely ladies including Griselda the gregarious hostess (an impressive Tash York), Tinkerbell the sneaky pastry chef (a very funny Amberly Cull), Madonna the deceitful botanist (a hard working Isabella Valette) and Daisy the morose paediatrician (a very clever Louisa Fitzhardinge).

After dates including a tandem bike ride, a day at the caravan park and a trip to Perth’s most exciting location - the Bell Tower, the virginal Tinkerbell was declared the winner.

Well done to audience intruders, Rochelle, Leah and La-lee and to the cast who added them seamlessly to the show.

The improvising is top notch, the improvised songs are impressive - under the care of musical improviser extraordinaire Robert Woods, and the audience has a ball.
The huge new venue, Teatro, means that everyone will get a seat.

The Bachela-la-la is a 'must see' for consenting adults, with some of the cleverest comedy you will see.
