John and Jen

John and Jen
By Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald. Stirling Players. Directed by Tyler Eldridge. Stirling Theatre, Morris Pl, Innaloo, WA. Sep 20 - Oct 5, 2019

Stirling Players’ John and Jen may be this year’s best kept secret. This beautifully produced two-hander may not be getting the audiences that it deserves (a little known show and the small cast make it a little hard to sell), but those that do catch this little gem will appreciate this excellent production.

The performers have a wonderful rapport and share convincing family relationships. Timothy Tyrie gives a top-notch performance, sharing a gorgeous voice and giving lovely depth and variance to two characters named John. Stephanie Hickey charts a beautiful path as Jen, with a sweetly sung performance of a character with lovely layers. The duo keep the audience engaged throughout, with beautifully crafted performances. A simply told story of a brother and sister, and later, a mother and son, touches many emotions.

The single set, designed by George Boyd, is particularly striking, featuring a wall of translucent cupboards, beautifully lit by John Woolrych, from which various props emerge. Usually presented as a scaled back production with minimal set and costumes, this version of John and Jen is fully realised and features lovely ‘of the era’ costuming, and some impressive quick changes, by Lynda Stubbs.

Strong singing, guided by vocal coach, director Tyler Eldridge, is supported by a strong 3 piece band under the direction of Musical Director Liam Gobbert. Sound balance (Tyler Eldridge) was superb.

This hidden treasure of a show is well worth a look, and certainly deserves a much bigger audience. Do yourself a favour and enjoy this lovely, little show.
