Jacky

By Declan Furber Gillick. MTC Next Stage Writers’ Program. Melbourne Theatre Company. Arts Centre Melbourne, Fairfax Studio. 22 May – 24 June 2023

Jacky is what used to be called a ‘problem play’.  In its incisive way, it dramatises an abiding and just now very contemporary issue: the place of indigenous people (and their culture) in a whitefella dominated, post-colonial society.  If that sounds all too ‘worthy’, Declan Furber Gillick’s play does that with sometimes shocking comedy, clear-eyed courage, and via vivid, sharply delineated characters.

The Sound of Music

Music: Richard Rodgers. Lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein 2nd. Book: Howard Lindsay & Russell Crouse. Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society (EUCMS). May 19 – June 3, 2023

Initially, thinking of The Sound of Music evokes the sweeping, iconic opening of the film as Julie Andrews’ Maria joyously roams the Austrian Alps for me. It’s easy to forget that the stage musical is mostly set in confined spaces like the convent and rooms at the Von Trapp villa, and adaptable to small stages.

The Gift

By Joanna Murray-Smith. Hamley Productions. Directed by Chris Hamley. Production Design by Katharine Hamley. Sound Design by Matt Harris. Lighting Design by Jason James. The Peacock Theatre, Hobart. 26 May – 3 June 2023

An adult of my acquaintance once admitted, somewhat shallowly, that they admired the musical Into the Woods but wished it finished at interval. If it did, Sondheim’s meaning and intention would not have been realised. The Gift has a similar problem in reverse. Act One of The Gift establishes everything necessary to comprehend the complexity of the extended climax of Act Two… but I wish it started at intermission.

Rapunzel

By Penny Shaw with music by Rossini. Freeze Frame Opera. Directed by Penny Shaw. Liberty Theatre, Barrack St, Perth. 27 May – 4 June 2023

Freeze Frame Opera’s show for children, Rapunzel, written and directed by Penny Shaw, is playing at Perth’s Liberty Theatre, for a short matinee only season.

Crocodiles

By Vidya Rajan. Elbow Room Theatre. Darebin Arts Speakeasy. Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre. May 24 – June 4, 2023

Crocodiles lie low in the water, unnoticed yet visible; in this new show, the co-founder of Elbow Room Theatre, director Marcel Downey, has crafted a visual and colourful palette of characters reflecting on the hidden world of Aged Care - examined with dramatic humour. It explores the core themes of modern society bound by class and race.

Mamma Mia!

Music and Lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Book by Catherine Johnson. Produced by Michael Coppel, Louise Withers and Linda Bewick. Directed by Gary Young OAM. First performance of 2023 Australian Tour: Lyric Theatre, Sydney, 27 March, 2023.

‘Here we go again!’ sing the company, and off round Australia again they head to great acclaim, no matter the multitude of times the songs of ABBA’s composers, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, have been heard and heard again. With 22 ABBA songs in their luggage, a rocking 8-piece band and an all-singing semi-clothed company (it’s set on a sun-drenched Greek island), they surely can’t go wrong.

A Chorus Line

Conceived by Michael Bennett. Book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante. Music by Marvin Hamlisch. Lyrics by Edward Kleban. Gilbert & Sullivan Society Of SA. The Arts Theatre, Angus St Adelaide. May 25 – June 3, 2023

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of SA continues their run of audience pleasers with the iconic audition musical, A Chorus Line, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante.

The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical began performances on Broadway at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre July 25, 1975 before officially opening October 19, 1975. When it closed 15 years later, it was the longest-running show in Broadway history, having played 6,137 performances.

Once Upon a Mattress

By Mary Rogers Marshall Barer, Jay Thompson and Dean Fuller. Art in Motion Theatre Company. Directed by Rachel Vonk. City of Gosnells Don Russell Performing Arts Centre, WA. May 19-27, 2023

Art in Motion Theatre Company presents this very solid, intelligent production of Once Upon a Mattress at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre. Musically strong, with fun choreography and well-rounded performances, this is a pleasure to watch.

Adrift

By Jane Miller. Directed by Beng Oh. 15 Minutes from Anywhere. La Mama HQ, Carlton. 24 May – 4 June 2023

Adrift is cross section of contemporary life with all its debilitating doubts, dangerous certainties, embedded anxieties, niggling frustrations, necessary evasions and misplaced rage.  Or, as Freud put it, ‘civilisation and its discontents’.  In snapshot grabs, the characters are locked in combat.  Most demand that others change – for their own good.  The conflicts are absurd – but not that absurd.

Hope and Gravity

By Michael Hollinger. Galleon Theatre Group. The Domain Theatre, Marion, SA. May 25 – June 3, 2023

I love a good puzzle, who doesn’t? Galleon Theatre Group have chosen an ingenious play Hope and Gravity by Michael Hollinger for their May season that is a combination of Cluedo and a jigsaw puzzle and is sure to create conversation (maybe over a few drinks) amongst the audience at half time and at the conclusion.
