Little Women

Little Women
Louisa May Alcott’s story, adapted by Peter Clapham. Directed by Christine Ellis KADS Town Square Theatre, Kalamunda, WA. 15 Nov - 6 Dec, 2013.

The well-known Little Women is a lovely choice for this time of year, being a play in which much of the action is centered around Christmas celebrations.

Director Christine Ellis has created a cosy and warm production, with a genuine feel-good atmosphere. The single setting was nicely drawn, which created a book-cover stage picture. Liza Moillin's costuming and hair-styling was picturesque and appropriate to the era.

The Little Women of the title were just lovely. The young Brittany Isaia belied her age with a mature portrayal of the oldest in the quartet, Meg. Clare Smale was a sweet and sympathetic Beth, while Kelsie Anderson brought energy and likability to Amy.

Rosie Collyer, as Jo, stood out in a particularly delightful performance in the most demanding role.

Lisa Skrypichayko was a very believable and lovely Marmee. Karen Woodcock-Hall was an efficient and genuine Hannah. Blake Prosser was picture-book perfect as Laurie, matching the novel's description to the letter. Rhett Clarke made a handsome and romantic John Brook and Paul Williams made the most of his after 10pm performance as Mr March. Helen Hopper was in danger of stealing the show as Aunt March, in a very commanding performance.

One of the more family orientated shows of the year, this was a pleasure to view.
