Love Me Slender

Love Me Slender
By Vanessa Brooks. Directed by Anita Bound. Kalamunda Dramatic Society. KADS Theatre, Town Square, Kalamunda, WA. April 21 - May 13, 2017

“Remember girls - not slim for today, not slim for tomorrow, but slim for life.” This is the motto for the slimming club, held in a church hall and led by autocratic over-achiever Siobhan. We follow their progress over half a year.

KADS create the dilapidated church hall beautifully - perhaps not surprisingly, considering that this lovely little theatre was once a church. Lovely detail from designer Geoff Rumsey and his team. There is straight-forward lighting and sound by Julie Hicking and Stephen Marr. Costumes, by Rose Weighell, and the cast, have some lovely character insights.

Set locally, which doesn’t always sit cleanly with the text, but gives some nice laughs, this is a production with nice camaraderie and a warm feel.

Siobhan Vincent plays her namesake Siobhan with unnerving passive-aggressive power. She leads an unlikely collection of ladies. Cathy Parr is very believable as bar manager from the wrong side of the tracks, Claudette. Marsha Holt brings credibility to marketing manager Lucinda. Charlotte Weber gives depth to the uncertain Jean. Sarah Langridge continues to grow as an actor, playing the conflicted Rosie. Raelene Cover is likeable as retiree Celia, while Laura Goodlet captures the audience’s sympathy as the complex Kelly.

A pleasing show with recognisable characters, that clearly struck a chord with the audience. Well done to KADS.
