Moominpappa at Sea

Moominpappa at Sea
Directed by Michael Barlow. Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Fremantle, WA. April 4-18, 2015

Spare Parts' April school holidays production is based on the Moomin books by Finnish writer Tove Jansson and is a gentle solo performance by Michael Barlow.

Moomins are troll-like creatures that resemble hippopotami, and designer Leon Hendroff puppet Moomins are charming and doll-like and are faithful to Jansson's original illustrations. Moominpappa at Sea is the eighth book of the original series, but those unfamiliar should feel at home with this journey of discovery and coming of age story, although some aspects are left unexplained, such as the gorgeous cartwheeling character Little My and how she fits into the story (she is an adopted child).

Michael Barlow is a delightful performer whose whimsical, genuine performance entranced the audience. While some of the youngest audience members became a little wriggly, most of those watching, young and old alike, were captivated by this sweet, but occasionally a little scary story.

Lee Buddle's composition is beautiful and Elliot Chambers intimate lighting design adds mood. Elliot Chambers performs quadruple duty in this production, operating from the stage, stage managing and adding a lackadaisical cameo performance.

Moominpappa at Sea is a sweet and engaging holiday treat, that is sure to send people out to hunt down the Moomin books. A beautiful Scandinavian tribute that leaves the audience feeling good.
