Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing
By William Shakespeare (The Shakesbeer Sessions). Presented by Bar’d Works. The King Of Tonga, 164A Tennyson Street, Elwood. 7 - 30 June, 2019 (various locations).

The opportunity to experience Shakespeare in a pub setting is truly rare. Bar’d works, highlights the bawdy and raucous nature of the Shakespeare’s work in order to recreate the atmosphere of the original performances. The show is adapted for a contemporary context, however, the same fundamental principles of a direct and interactive approach are applied. The result is a refreshing and energetic take on this canonical text.

The rear lounge of the Elwood pub was easily transformed into a cosy and intimate venue for a rendition of Much Ado About Nothing. The jovial nature of the performances, accompanied by some excellent singing and music, are among the many highlights. The text is left largely intact to maintain the beauty and rhythm of the poetic language and is delivered with gusto.

Alexandra Aldrich not only has a powerful singing voice but her imposing presence on stage makes Beatrice larger than life. Grant Foulkes renders Benedick an extremely amiable character and charms the audience through the confident manner in which he drops in and out of character. Heath Anderson makes Claudio youthful but fiery which is well suited for the dramatic moments. Mariska Murphy is exceptional as Hero and hilarious as Dogberry, carrying the two contrasting parts in a masterful fashion.

Nigel Langley’s more bizarre approach to Don John proves to be very popular and his interpretation of Verges and Margaret equally elicit many laughs. Tom O’Sullivan gives Don Pedro a wise and handsome demeanour. David Meadows plays Leonardo in a very amusing ocker tone. Lisa Woodbrook is nothing short of sensational in her role as Conrade. Her magnificent singing voice also lends fantastic vigour to the show. Collectively, this very talented troupe turns raw theatre into a magical, fun-filled experience.
