One False Move...

One False Move...
NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts). Co-directed by Megan Jones and Meridith Kitchen. NICA National Circus Centre, Prahran (Vic). 19 – 29 June 2013

This fast-paced circus show features NICA’s second year artists in an original performance that draws inspiration from the events and characters that inhabit the fictional world of the Film Noir genre. The title refers to a shared aspect of circus and film noir – the tension created by the fear that one false move could spell disaster.

The directors have used a series of small humorous Film Noir inspired scenes to link a number of acts into a single performance. The performers were confident and there were very few false moves as they presented a variety of skills including Teeter Board, German Wheel, Tightwire, Clowning, Aerial, Chinese pole, Acrobatics, Hula Hoops and more. While there were a few rough edges and an occasional worried face, these students are well on their way to becoming outstanding circus performers.

A live band starts the night – a great sound which is even more impressive as these musicians then morphed into circus performers and joined their fellow students onstage. The music throughout the performance is varied in style with some live, some recorded, sometimes both at the same time, and always complimenting the action onstage.

The lighting is well done, supports the action on stage and never dominates. Highlights include a beautifully lit cyclorama, hand held lanterns used to light a balancing act, and the measured use of moving light gobos – the spirals during the Hula Hoops were a favourite.

This performance is a must for any student thinking of learning circus skills. It will encourage and delight.
